Eilat Casino Plans Halted
3 December 2005
Israeli Tourism Minister Avraham Hirchson has suspended plans to build a casino in Eilat, a popular tourist destination in Israel. The Minister informed Israeli Parliament members that he would only consider re-thinking the casino issue once the Israeli governmental elections are over.
Hirchson made this announcement at a meeting headed by MK Shaul Yahalom of the National Religious Party. Yahalom is against a casino in the country and feels that it would be just as bad as making prostitution legal. He also believes that gambling will increase crimes rates.
Meir Yitzhak-Halevy, the Mayor of Eilat, has protested this move along with the director general of the hotel unions in Eilat, Shabtai Shai. Both parties feel that the casino will be beneficial to the city as well as the country because it will create competition with casino hotels in other countries.
