Australian Casino Not Disciplined For Negligence in Drug Scandal
6 December 2005
After investigating SkyCity Casino in Adelaide over its negligence in not reporting a man who had been seen taking drugs on its premises during a function held by Port Adelaide Football Club, the Independent Gambling Authority (IGA) has decided not to discipline the casino. SkyCity Casino's surveillance footage of the man was ignored, as security staff did not want to ruin relations between the casino and the Football club. Despite clearing the casino of negligence, the IGA still emphasized the importance of reporting such incidents to the IGA as well as to Liquor and Gambling Commissioner Bill Pryor. Michael Silberling, the casino's new general manager, has shown regret for not informing police about the drug incident, and has assured the IGA that such negligence will not occur again.
Although the IGA does not believe that anything more can be done or said with regards to this matter, MLC Nick Xenophon of “No Pokies,” an organization prompted by poker machines, which have been associated with the widespread problem gambling in South Australia, feels that the casino was wrong not to inform the police about the incident.
