California Casino Dealers Must Wait For Tips
10 December 2005
Two Californian casino resorts, the Spa Resort Casino in Palm Springs and the Agua Caliente Casino in Rancho Mirage, have taken up a new policy according to which dealers will only receive tips after a two-week delay. All dealers' tips will be pooled together and divided later among the individual dealers. Only those running poker tables will be exempt from this new policy. All other casino dealers will have to wait to receive their tips. Casino operators feel that this method will help them escape an expected IRS audit.
Many dealers are concerned about this new policy, as daily tips constitute their bread and butter. One casino dealer resigned when the new policy was implemented. IRS officials have not commented about Agua Calientes, but have said that they usually avoid tip audits as they tend to be time consuming.
Despite this, Agua Caliente will carry on with this policy. Dealers will elect a counting committee and security personnel, which will count daily tips. Tips will then go to the cage where they will be divided, only then to go to the dealers paycheck. This new system requires that the casino provide more security and cameras, which will monitor the count.
