Americans Say Yes to Legalization of U.S. Online Casino Sites
15 December 2005
Scoop.net, a media site that aims to give a voice to the public, allowing people to give their views on certain topics, held a weekly hot topic poll in order to determine the views of American citizens on whether or not U.S. companies should be permitted to run online casino websites. This “Hot Topic” poll was held in order to gain insight into how many people would support the legalization of American-run online casino websites. The poll showed that 67 percent of the Americans surveyed support U.S. companies running online casinos.
This survey was conducted as a reaction to the large amount of publicity surrounding U.S. involvement in the online casino industry. This publicity is indeed warranted considering the potential economic boon of U.S-based online gaming. It was reported that the online casino industry recently exceeded 10 billion dollars in worldwide revenues. Many analysts believe that 1.8 billion dollars in tax revenues could have been collected by U.S. government entities, if it had been legal to run online casinos.
The survey conjured up a number of mixed reactions about online casino gaming. About 33.7 percent of participants felt that U.S. companies should be given the opportunity to run online casinos, but wouldn't personally play at them. A further 33.9 percent indicated that they enjoy playing at online casino sites. All in all, the survey showed that most Americans would prefer to play at U.S.-based casinos as it would make them feel more secure. The survey also indicated that most people feel the U.S. government should not be involved in the regulation of online casino players, as the Internet crosses over U.S. borders.
