Should Atlantic City Casino Establishments Be Included in No-Smoking Ban?
17 December 2005
Members of Atlantic City's food and beverage industry are outraged at a proposed bill that may ban smoking in restaurants, bars and other public places, but not in casinos. Food and beverage industry representatives are against the bill, and feel it is unfair that Atlantic City casino establishments would be excluded from the ban.
Some restaurant owners believe that their businesses may crumble if this ban were to be implemented. Others oppose smoking altogether, and believe that all entertainment venues, including casinos, should be banned from allowing smoking. The Group Against Smoking Pollution (GASP) have lobbied for smoke-free work environments for over thirty years. The group feels that a partial ban is better than nothing, but will continue push for the health of casino workers.
Acting Gov. Richard J. Codey is all for banning smoking in casinos and will appeal to the state senate for this purpose. Opponents of a casino smoking ban believe that gamblers may be driven away from Atlantic City casinos by such a ban, a trend that could lead to job losses.
