Move Over Granny: Youth invades Atlantic City casino scene
26 December 2005
Gone are the days when Atlantic City was a venue for senior citizen slot-lovers. Today, many youngsters come to Atlantic City to paint the town red and test out lady luck on the casino scene. Atlantic City has moved out of its old-age mode, and has become home to the hottest night clubs, such as the one owned by rap icon Jay-Z.
From sassy night clubs and casinos to beach bars and trendy music, Atlantic City has transformed into a popular entertainment destination. The opening of the Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa in mid-2003 is believed to have been the trend-setter for this change. The casino resort emphasized good times and sexiness more than actual gambling in its ad campaigns. This attracted the younger generation who, before, barley visited this casino destination.
Slot machines, which were once the focus in Atlantic City casinos, have become less popular with the addition of blackjack, roulette and craps tables. This made a major difference in attracting more youngsters to casinos, as it is believed that they enjoy interaction with others, rather than playing against a machine. Today, sixty percent of Atlantic City casino players are under the age of 50, and it seems that more youthful gamblers are yet to come.
