Bangkok Police “Thai” the Hands of Dozens at New Year's Eve Casino Raid
1 January 2006
An illegal casino in the Tao Poon area of Bangkok's Bang Sue district was raided for the second time by police officers, with 100 gamblers arrested, and 2 million baht ($48,780) confiscated. Police officers' knowledge that the casino planned to proceed with business operations during the new year led to this raid.
A total of about 150 uniformed and undercover police officers raided the casino. Undercover police pretended to be regular gamblers before signaling to officers waiting outside to raid the casino building. One hundred and eight gamblers were caught and taken to different Bangkok police stations for questioning.
The casino's owners and bookies were charged by the Tao Poon police and were arraigned yesterday afternoon at the Northern Bangkok district court. Police have insisted that the owner of the casino building, Suwin sae Lim, be given a harsher punishment as he had violated his probation after being arrested once before for running a casino.
