Las Vegas Casino Goes Out with a Bang
13 January 2006
Since going bankrupt in January 2004, the Castaways hotel and casino in Las Vegas has been a deserted location. This week, following a long period of halted business operations, the 19 floor casino building came tumbling down after a number of planned explosions caused the structure to implode.
Castaways hotel and casino was opened in 1955 under the name “The Showboat,” a venue that hosted bowling tours. For many years, the casino had various owners and struggled to remain above water. The September 11 attacks didn't help much either, causing tourism in the area to slow down, which, in turn, had a negative impact on the casino hotel.
The Castaways' owners, Las Vegas-based Station Casinos Inc., have not yet announced future plans for the land.
