Sun International: Sorry Your Guide Dog Couldn't Enter Casino
17 January 2006
South African casino company Sun international has officially apologized to a blind couple whose guide dog was denied access to Carnival City casino in Johannesburg. Lisa Bensch, a blind psychology student from Cape town, was visiting her boyfriend, who is also blind, along with her guide dog, Pam, in Johannesburg.
The blind couple decided to visit Carnival City casino, where, much to their surprise, they were told that they were not allowed to enter the casino with Bensch's guide dog. This angered the couple, as well as a number of bystanders. According to the casino security manager, a gambling board ruling was behind the decision to keep the guide dog out. Bensch's boyfriend, however, reportedly claimed that there was no such ruling, as his guide dog had been allowed into another casino on a previous occasion.
Sun International later apologized for the unpleasant incident at Carnival City casino, and stated that it was all a misunderstanding that arose from bad communication. The couple may have accepted Sun Internationals apology, but they still refuse to visit the Carnival City casino ever again. The casino company has offered the couple "full hospitality" at all of its casinos.
