New Orleans Casino Boat Barely Survives Hurricane, Sunk in Debt
20 January 2006
It appears as though The Belle of Orleans' luck has almost run out. The New Orleans casino boat sustained heavy damage when Hurricane Katrina swept through the region at the end of last summer. Having barely remained afloat, The Belle of Orleans was sent to a shipyard in neighboring Alabama for repairs. With all these troubles to contend with, the casino's owners, Columbia Sussex Corporation, didn't need to receive the news that their boat might be seized by court order.
Federal Magistrate William E. Cassady signed the seizure order in light of the fact that The Belle of Orleans has not paid approximately $1.3 million in leasing fees to the Orleans Levee Board. With just 10 days to come up with the money, it is questionable as to whether The Belle of Orleans casino boat will ever set sail again. Under the terms of the agreement between the Orleans Levee Board and The Belle of Orleans, leasing fees must be paid whether the casino is operating or not. Guess the house doesn't always win ...
