Las Vegas Casino Owners Plan for Chinese New Year
27 January 2006
It pays for casino owners to know their customers. Many casino owners are aware of the fact that, according to Chinese tradition, the number 4 is unlucky, while the color red and number 8 are lucky. Many Las Vegas casino owners also know that this Sunday marks the beginning of the Year of the Dog on the Chinese calender. In honor of the event, they plan to lure Asian gamblers to their casinos, as the Chinese are reported to gamble the most during this time of year.
A number of Las Vegas casinos have decorated their casino facilities with red lanterns, orange trees, gold coins as well as other Chinese symbols of luck and prosperity. Caesars Palace, the Venetian, and MGM will be hosting various traditional Chinese events such as the traditional "painting of the eye" lion ceremony, a dragon dance, and more. All of these happenings will take place in the casino area. Non-Chinese casino visitors will also be able to enjoy the array of colorful and ethnic decorations.
Casinos' celebration of the Chinese New Year was once a small event, which was geared mostly toward casino high-rollers. Today, it has grown, attracting middle-income Chinese and Asian-Americans. The event has become extremely popular in Las Vegas, and most casino hotels are fully booked during this period.
According to tradition, the Chinese New Year is the best time to gamble, as this holiday is connected to the testing of one's luck. Many believe that, if a person wins a bet in a casino during this time , he or she will have luck for the year to come.
