Former Casino Employees Outraged by Favoritism Towards Native Workers
4 February 2006
Four non-aboriginal casino workers at Northern Lights Casino in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, Canada, have approached the Saskatchewan Human Rights Commission claiming they lost their jobs because they were non-native.
Reportedly, casino workers were ensured by their employers that all casino staff were like family and that they should feel secure in their positions. Diane Wallace, an employee at Northern Lights Casino, was reportedly shocked when the four white workers were laid off from the casino. The casino allegedly tries to keep a balance of approximately 80 per cent aboriginal and 20 per cent non-aboriginal workers. It was believed however, that this balance would be maintained through hiring additional workers instead of by laying off existing staff members.
According to Northern Lights casino managers, these staff reductions were made purely because more slot machines were to be added to the casino, and therefore, fewer gambling tables and staff would be needed.
