Ethiopia Casino Proposal to be Weighed by Council of Ministers
7 February 2006
Ethiopians could soon be seeing a casino in one their country's five-star hotels. The casino's launch hinges on the nation's Council of Ministers approval of a project presented to them by the Ministry of Revenue. If the ministers approve the draft, it will be presented to the Ethiopian parliament at the end of the week.
Officials will make arrangements with regard to where the casino games will be situated within a particular hotel complex, who will be able to play, and wagering limits. The new casino regulations will be compiled according to existing regulations in the casinos of neighboring countries such as Egypt and Kenya. It is believed that the casino will be beneficial to Ethiopia as it will attract tourists, who will hopefully bring more money into the country's economy. A further benefit of the casino is that it will most likely create employment opportunities for many Ethiopian citizens. A similar casino proposal was presented to parliament in 1995, but was not approved.
In the late 1980s, the Ghion Hotel in Addis Ababa operated a casino. It was shut down by the prime minister at the time, Fikre Selassie Wogderesse, due to a fight that had broken out, killing one person.
