Addictive Asian Casino Gamblers on the Rise in New Zealand.
20 February 2006
The number of problem gamblers are on the rise in New Zealand, and most of these casino-goers are Asian. It was reported by the Problem Gambling Foundation (PGF) that most of these problematic gamblers make no efforts to seek help.
A conference was held last week by the PGF's Asian services team. Police, addiction counselors, educators, social workers, and representatives from a number of Asian communities and government departments attended the conference and were informed that there were services available, which provide advice on how to cope with these addictive Asian Casino gamblers.
Also discussed was the self-barring system implemented by casinos, as well as ways of dealing with Asian clients. Reports showed that the majority of addictive casino gamblers in New Zealand are Asian and that they gamble often in order to cope with their new lives in a foreign country.
PGF's main aim is to provide knowledge and assistance to addictive casino gamblers. The group also aims to help families hosting international students who are addicted to casinos deal with their problems.
