New York Town Officials Given Preview of Tribe's Casino Proposal
24 February 2006
Town officials in Auburn, New York, have been given a preview into the Seneca-Cayuga Tribe's proposed casino. During a presentation, the tribe informed officials that the $400 million casino and resort will be located on a 400-acre site about three miles north of Auburn.
The casino resort will have a 300-room luxury hotel, with three different restaurants, a health spa and a fitness center, shopping stores, an 18-hole golf course as well as a night club. The tribe stated that it will pay all property and sales taxes, which will amount to approximately $95 million a year. The tribe has also estimated that the casino resort will create about 2,000 jobs.
Reports show that mixed reactions arose from the tribe's casino proposal. Some were intrigued by its willingness to pay taxes and felt that the casino would be beneficial. However, others were against the idea, citing that it was unfair that only the tribe could open a casino. No decision has yet been made, and town board members need time to study the casino proposal.
