Armed Men Rob South African Casino
6 March 2006
A group of 17 men, believed to have been armed with AK-47s, robbed the Tusk Umfolozi Casino in Empangeni, South Africa this past Saturday night. KwaZulu-Natal police reported that nearly R1-million (approximately US$160,000) was stolen from the casino. The gang entered the casino just before midnight and immediately ordered the patrons to lay flat on the floor. They then helped themselves to the loot inside the casino vault and the cash registry.
KwaZulu-Natal captain Tienkie van Vuuren reported that two of the casino's patrons were personally robbed of a couple thousand rand (over US$300). After completing the heist, the gang then fled from the casino. Local authorities are currently in pursuit.
