Women to Run New Nepalese Casino
7 March 2006
A new casino is scheduled to open in Nepal this coming summer. The kingdom's seventh casino, Casino Shangrila, will be run by a female CEO from India, and will be staffed, for the most part, by women. Entrepreneur Shalini Wadhwa, known for her public relations and business skill, will be the first woman to run a Nepal casino.
Casino Shangrila, which will be built on the grounds of the newly upgraded five-star Hotel Shangrila, will open before the planned Pokhara casino, which was initially planned to open first.
Wadhwa, editor of "The Boss," "Voice of Women," and "Casino Times" magazines, is no stranger to the world of land-based casino facilities. Her husband, Rakesh Wadhwa, is the executive director of Nepal's Recreation Center, which owns the country's six existing casinos.
Women holding top-positions in Asia is not a new occurrence. Several women own and run some of Katmandu's finest hotels. However, it is yet to be seen how a female touch will affect the local casino sector. Officials hope the new casino will aid the country's slumping tourism industry.
