South African Lawyer Sues Casino for Millions
10 March 2006
Jayshree Asalan, a South African lawyer, has been denied a payout of R42.9 million (about $6.8 million) by the KwaZulu-Natal Gambling Board. Asalan won the money from a casino machine at Suncoast Casino and Entertainment World in Durban. According to the Gaming Board, the machine had malfunctioned and the win was therefore canceled. Asalan was furious by this decision and stated that she would sue the casino for millions, as she believed that she rightfully won the money from the machine. According to Ken Ladbrooke, the acting Chief Executive of the Gambling Board, the machine at the casino malfunctioned and, when this occurs, players are not entitled to receive any payouts.
Apparently, the casino machine in question did not even list a winning combination for R42.9 million. The machine broke down before Asalan's bet was processed and showed this high figure, which was incorrect. Despite the explanations, Aslalan has stated that she was traumatized by the event and would take the matter to court.
