Women Get Increasingly Addicted to Casino Games
13 March 2006
Whether in land-based casinos or online, gambling activities are becoming increasingly popular all over the world. Contrary to what is generally believed, not just men become addicted to the excitement of casino games. A growing number of women in the U.S. are becoming compulsive gamblers as well.
According to the National Council on Problem Gambling, currently, as many as 50% of those seeking help regarding gambling addiction are women. Some psychologists reportedly maintain that, while in the past, most women gambled to escape the routine of their everyday lives, nowadays, women are simply lured by the casino action. Many female former casino addicts argue that, much like drugs, gambling is an addiction that is extremely difficult to fight.
Official records demonstrate that, twenty years ago, only a handful of compulsive gamblers seeking treatment were women. Experts predict that, in the near future, casino gambling will earn a place alongside alcoholism and drug abuse as being one of the most significant and hard-to-fight addictions of modern times.
