UK Gambling Commission Unveils New Casino Operation Rules
14 March 2006
The UK Gambling Commission recently published rules that are designed to govern the proposed new generation of casinos in Britain. Restrictions on alcoholic beverages, licensing dealers, and the provision of help for problem gamblers are only some of the measures operators of the casinos will be required to implement. Contravention of some of these rules may lead to the annulment of a casino's operating license.
Peter Dean, the Commission's chairman, was reported as saying that the Commission has used international experience to make sure that standards of social responsibility among current and future gambling operators will be the highest in the world. Last year, as many as £53 billion was invested in gambling activities, and approximately one million individuals have been estimated to regularly gamble at online casino sites.
The 2005 Gambling Act is scheduled to come into force in September, 2007. Since many critics of the bill reportedly expressed fear that the proposed gambling expansion could increase problem gambling rates, the number of authorized regional super-casinos was reduced to one. The Act also created the Commission to police all gambling facilities across the UK. The Gambling Commission's responsibilities also include oversight of online gambling websites.
