MGM Mirage Links Up with Cirque du Soleil to Reinforce Bid for Singapore's First Casino
17 March 2006
In order to reinforce its bid for the right to develop a casino resort at Singapore's Marina Bay site, MGM Mirage, one of the world's leading hotel and casino operators, has entered into agreement with the Canadian-based entertainment company Cirque du Soleil. Under the new agreement, Cirque du Soleil is expected to create and present a resident show at the planned casino resort.
Cirque du Soleil already has four resident shows at MGM Mirage resorts in Las Vegas, and a fifth show is slated to open in June. Terry Lanni, MGM Mirage's chairman and CEO, was recently reported as saying that permanent shows at the company's Las Vegas casinos have done extremely well. He added that Cirque Du Soleil's "O" show at the Bellagio casino sold nearly 99% of all available seats in 2005. Lanni also reportedly believes the Singapore resort patrons will probably be similar to people visiting the Las Vegas casino facilities, in terms of their entertainment preferences.
MGM's tie-up with Cirque du Soleil is most likely an attempt to fend off challenges posed by the gaming company's competitors, who also hope to operate Singapore's first casino. For example, Harrah's Entertainment Inc., the world's largest casino entertainment provider, linked up with famous Hollywood director James Cameron in order to develop a high-tech theme park at the future Singapore resort, if its bid wins the tender. The local government is expected to select the winning bid by mid-2006.
