California Senate Candidates Return Campaign Contributions to Indicted Casino Operator
19 March 2006
Two candidates for California's Senate, Assemblyman Leland Yee and former San Mateo County Supervisor Mike Nevin, are reportedly giving back campaign contributions they recently received from Renato Medina, a local casino operator accused of tax evasion. Yee is returning to Medina as much as $6,500 in contributions, and Nevin $3,500.
Yee was reported as saying that he believes that such a move is necessary in order to preserve the public trust. Nevin's spokesperson Seamus Murphy said that the campaign decided to return the money to Medina, who owns the Lucky Chances Casino in Colma, to avoid any appearance of impropriety. Nevertheless, former Assemblyman Lou Papan, the third candidate for the senate seat, criticized Nevin and Yee for taking the money in the first place.
However, even though all three candidates decided to keep their distance from Medina, some in Colma continue to support the man whose casino has generated substantial revenues in gaming taxes for the small town. Medina is also known for his generous contributions to local charities. Over the past several years, the indicted casino operator has given $10,000 to the Daly City Emergency Food Pantry.
