Former Quebec Councilor Sues Local Casino over Cheating Charges
20 March 2006
Jean-Guy Binet, an ex-city councilor in Gatineau, Quebec, who was acquitted of card-cheat accusations a year ago, is currently suing Casino du Lac-Leamy, local police, and prosecutors for more than $1 million. Binet was recently reported as saying that although Justice Pierre Chevalier ultimately found him innocent of cheating at cards, the massive media coverage that his case has received cost him his job as city councilor and the public's trust.
According to Binet, his good name was first tainted when he was accused, in 2001, of marking cards while playing Let It Ride poker at the casino during the prior year. Binet's lawsuit reportedly argues that following the actions of Casino du Lac-Leamy employees, members of the Surete du Quebec and the Quebec Crown prosecutor's office destroyed his reputation forever.
Binet, 62, demands to be paid $1,050,000, including $250,000 in damage to his reputation, as well as $100,000 for the stress, humiliation, and health problems he suffered as a result of the casino's allegations. He is also claiming as much as $200,000 in lost income. Binet said that although the damages he is seeking will not alleviate his humiliation, it would help him restore his reputation. Both sides are scheduled to appear in court in May.
