Two Demolition Team Workers Die in Mississippi Casino Barge Accident
22 March 2006
Two construction workers died yesterday after a large portion of the Hurricane Katrina-damaged Grand Casino Gulfport barge in Mississippi suddenly collapsed. Other members of the construction team called for help after the two men, who went to a part of the vessel that was filled with water to pump it out, did not come back. The only information currently available about the two workers is that one of them is from Mexico and the other is from Virginia.
The collapsed section of the damaged casino barge was about the size of a shipping container. Gulfport Fire Chief Pat Sullivan was reported as saying that, at first, firefighters hoped that the two men had simply fallen and been injured. A short time later, however, when they could not be found, rescue personnel realized that the construction workers were dead.
Sullivan said that his confined-space and hazardous-materials teams are cooperating with the U.S. Coast Guard to recover the bodies of the two unfortunate construction workers. Harrah's Entertainment sold its Grand Gulfport property to Gulfside Casino Partnership last week. However, under the agreement, Harrah's is still responsible for all demolition work. Local authorities are investigating the cause of the accident.
