Two Alleged Kidnappers Apprehended in Californian Casino
26 March 2006
Two suspected kidnappers, a man and a woman, were recently arrested at the Spotlight 29 Casino in Coachella, California. Fernando Parada Laborin, 30, and Adriana Yesenia Arana, 30, both residents of Phoenix, Arizona, have been taken into custody after demanding ransom for the release of two undocumented Mexican immigrants they had managed to smuggle into the U.S.
Luckily, thanks to the casino's security personnel, the two alleged kidnappers did not get away with their crime. The gaming venue's security guard alerted authorities after he had spotted Laborin and Arana inside the casino with one of the immigrants, who apparently looked highly distressed. The second kidnapped immigrant was found shackled and tied to the floorboard of the suspects' vehicle, parked outside the casino.
Authorities believe that the suspected kidnappers intended to collect a ransom from the victims' families, who reportedly reside in Mecca, California. Dennis E. Gutierrez, a spokesperson for the Riverside County Sheriff's Department, was reported as saying that the two victims will be allowed to stay in the country to assist with the prosecutions of Laborin and Arana. Both Mexican men's names have not yet been released to the media.
