Casino-Barge Employees Catch Alleged Vandal Floating Down a River
27 March 2006
A 19-year-old resident of Aldergrove, British Colombia was recently apprehended by the police thanks to the assistance of local casino-barge employees. The teenager is part of a group of youngsters who were spotted by a patrol officer while allegedly vandalizing some vehicles several blocks away from the Fraser River.
When police showed up at the scene of the crime, the gang scattered. The 19-year-old suspect ran directly for the river and dove straight in. Staff Sergeant Dave Jansen was reported as saying that police lost sight of the suspect after he was carried away by the river's extremely strong current. After the police and coast guard searched the river unsuccessfully, employees of the Royal Star Casino boat turned their spotlight over the water and found the young man clinging to a floating log.
Authorities report that since the suspected vandal had lost the ability to use his legs, the rescue effort was a painful process. When the rescue team finally managed to convince the young man to put a rescue ring under his arms, they were able to pull him onto their boat. According to Sergeant Ivan Chu, the suspect is lucky to be alive. He now faces various criminal charges.
