Schwarzenegger Signs Bill Which Will Transfer Money to Casino-hosting Counties
30 March 2006
California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger recently signed a bill that will transfer millions of dollars to approximately a dozen state counties that host tribal casinos. The measure, crafted by state Senator Jim Battin and sponsored by the Tribal Alliance of Sovereign Indian Nations (TASIN), will restore $20 million currently being collected by the Indian Gaming Special Distribution Fund (SDF) to local councils.
Under their compacts with the state, casino-operating tribes contribute millions of dollars to the SDF on an annual basis. In turn, those revenues are transfered to cities, counties, and other local agencies to hire new police and fire department personnel, purchase public safety equipment, build roads, and make other improvements that are necessary in order to accommodate the excess activity generated by casino operation.
Lynn Valbuena, chairwoman of the TASIN, was quoted as saying, "This is great news for local communities. ... TASIN tribes pay significant revenues into the fund each year to help local communities. It was a promise we made to the voters years ago, and it's a promise we've kept."
