Scotland's Casino Employees Risk Their Health
31 March 2006
According to a survey recently conducted by the GMB union, casino employees in Scotland are risking their health due to long hours and poor working conditions. The survey results reveal that as many as 75% of the croupiers working at Glasgow's five casinos suffer from back and neck problems, while 20% suffer from numbness and tingling in their hands because of pressure on nerves.
Scotland's casino workers reportedly argue that gaming operators allow big-spending visitors to abuse and threaten them, as they are afraid of losing them as customers. The survey also found that incidents involving racial harassment have doubled over the past three years, along with 40% of the female staff surveyed maintaining that they had suffered sexual harassment.
Richard Leonard, GMB's Glasgow organizer for casino workers, was reported as saying that although the casino world seems glamorous from the outside, it is actually very different from the inside. According to Leonard, unless casino managers start treating their employees with more consideration, they will likely face major damage claims. Nearly 1,000 workers are employed in Scotland's 12 casinos, with 500 of them working in Glasgow.
