Ex-Marine Accused of Attempted Armed Robbery of Casino
10 April 2006
Joshua White, a resident of Missoula, Montana, was recently accused of attempted robbery and of carrying a concealed weapon. Undercover police officers spotted White, an ex-Marine, standing outside the city's Lucky Lil's Casino. White first drew the officers' attention because he was wearing camouflage, with his face and hands painted in black. It ultimately turned out that he was armed with a loaded 38-caliber pistol and carried a lock-blade knife.
Fred Van Valkenburg, a Missoula County Attorney, demanded a $50,000 bail amount, pointing out the climate of fear related to the recent increase in armed casino attacks in the area. Valkenburg was reported as saying that the court would take into consideration potential issues of post-traumatic stress disorder and drug addiction, possible results of White's military service.
According to court records, when asked by two police officers why was he armed with a loaded weapon outside a casino at such a strange hour of the night, the 22-year-old man reportedly answered that he was looking for his car. None of the cars stationed in the area of the casino belonged to the accused. White's attorney John Hart requested that his client be released on his own recognizance, charging that he is unlikely to flee due to family ties in Missoula.
