Texan Gubernatorial Candidate Kinky Friedman Plans to Legalize Casino Gambling
13 April 2006
Texas' gubernatorial candidate, musician and author Kinky Friedman, was recently reported as saying that, if he is elected governor, he would legalize tribal casino gambling within state borders, allow commercial companies to fund high school sports, and consider a moratorium on death penalty.
At the Associated Press Managing Editors' annual convention, Friedman said that one of his main priorities is to fund state education. In order to achieve this goal, Friedman reportedly intends to legalize casinos, levy a 1% tax on oil and gas produced in Texas, and fund high school sports via corporate sponsorships.
Friedman reportedly said that if he is elected Texas' next governor, he intends to further secure the state's border with Mexico. He also said that he does not believe that illegal immigrants already staying in the US should be documented before those who have applied for citizenship through legal channels.
Nevertheless, Governor Rick Perry's spokesperson, Robert Black, said that Friedman's propositions will be extremely hard-pressed to obtain legislative approval.
