Two Hispanic Women Claim Scapegoating in Reno's Peppermill Casino Dismissals
2 May 2006
Mirna Miranda and Belia Solis, two Hispanic women who recently lost their casino jobs, were reported as arguing that Reno's Peppermill Hotel-Casino supervisors fired them for participating in an April 10th immigration rally and intimidating their Hispanic co-workers. In response, the casino officials vehemently denied such allegations.
Solis, who supervised two of the Peppermill hotel floors for several years, was terminated on April 14, while Miranda, who has been employed as a cook, was dismissed on April 20. Solis said that she felt like a scapegoat, used as a warning for other Hispanic workers at the gaming venue. Solis is protesting her dismissal via an in-house board-of-review process.
Nevertheless, Peppermill spokeswoman Kim Stoll reportedly said the the facility's management does believe in freedom of speech, and, therefore, the aforementioned dismissals had nothing to do with the immigration rally. She also said that, under Nevada's labor law, the casino is prohibited to reveal the reasons for the two women's dismissals.
