The Casino Advisory Panel, an independent body set up by Tessa Jowell, the Culture Secretary, also announced a shortlist of 31 proposals for large and small U.K. casinos. Large casino facilities will be allowed to operate up to 150 slot machines and offer jackpots of as much as £4,000. A final recommendation by the panel will be publicized by the end of 2006.
At a prior occasion, Jowell was reported as saying that she did not believe that the future casino properties would necessarily trigger an increase in problem gambling rates. Jowell also insisted that Britain's new gambling laws provided the country with a very protective legislation. Nevertheless, the gambling advice charity GamCare said that the total number of people seeking counseling increased by 41.3% since 2004.
