Casino Mogul Wynn Purchases Unique Ming Vase, Donates It to Macau Museum
2 June 2006
Steve Wynn, a heavy-weight U.S. casino operator, recently made a truly amazing purchase in a Hong Kong auction. One of casino industry's most prominent figures reportedly bought an exceptionally rare 14th-century Ming dynasty vase for as much as $US10.1 million. Nevertheless, it was not even the price of the Chinese vase that was so incredible, but the fact that Wynn immediately donated the unique artifact to a Macau museum.
The chief executive of Wynn Resorts Ltd. has been collecting art for decades. A few years ago, he spent over $US25 million on several artifacts by Picasso and Cezanne in a single day. Although, for a long period of time the casino mogul has been ridiculed by the art establishment for paying outrageous sums of money for second-rate works, Wynn's generous donation may ultimately have left his critics speechless.
