South African Gaming Operator Sun International Pulls Out from Singapore Casino Bid
4 June 2006
A prominent South African casino operator Sun International recently announced that it would not submit an application to construct the second of Singapore's two planned casino facilities. According to Sun International officials, the development of a gaming resort on the island of Sentosa is likely to involve too great a diversion of the company's resources.
Peter Bacon, Sun International CEO, was reported as saying that the casino company was pursuing two other promising projects in the United Kingdom. Bacon added that, later in 2006, Sun International planed to open a new casino at Worcester in the Western Cape. The CEO also said that the Singapore government deserved credit for a well-managed and scrupulously fair application process.
The list of remaining bidders for Singapore's second casino includes industry-leading companies, such as Kerzner International and partner CapitaLand Ltd, Genting International and partner Star Cruises, and Harrah's Entertainment and partner Keppel Land. Singapore government said that it wanted the future gaming resort to feature family-friendly attractions to attract tourists to the region.
