Ukraine Catholic Church Opposes Casino Development Near Cathedral
20 June 2006
Officials at City Council in Kiev, Ukraine, recently authorized investment company Terra Capital to purchase a property near the Ukrainian Catholic Church's new cathedral and develop a casino on it. Nevertheless, the church officials argued that this transaction was illegal, since the church's request to construct a secondary school on this property had been rejected by the council.
On a prior occasion, Cardinal Lubomyr Husar of Kiev-Halych, head of the Ukrainian Catholic Church, was reported as saying that Terra Capital's proposed casino plan was an offense to the believers' religious feelings, also stating that the district would be better off with a new church school rather than a gaming venue.
Cardinal Husar added that, although he understood that behind the approval of the casino development project stood financial reasons, not everything should be measured with money. According to the cardinal, over a thousand Kiev citizens signed a petition sent to the local City Council urging its members to reconsider their decision regarding the future casino facility.
