Canadian Casino Denies Slot Machine Winnings
5 July 2006
Two Canadian casino-goers were recently denied their slot machine winnings due to a gaming software error. The two men hit a jackpot of as much as U.S.$190,000 while playing a nickel Keno slot machine at a Winnipeg casino. However, the casino refused to pay out the money maintaining that the winning message was a mistake since the nickel machines normally do not pay out more than $3,000.
Following the casino's refusal to pay out the jackpot, the two men hired a lawyer and claimed that they would seek legal action against the gaming venue. Attorney Josh Weinstein said that messages on the machine indicated that successfully matching five numbers would pay out the equivalent of over four million nickels. According Weinstein, his clients should not be punished for the software error, if the winning message was indeed an error.
Nevertheless, Susan Olynik, a vice-president of the Manitoba Lotteries Corporation, was reported as saying that the casino's slot machines had a sticker informing players that any "malfunction" canceled all potential winnings. Olynik also stated that the aforementioned malfunction was very rare.
