Eye On Gambling (EOG.com): Independence Day Has A Hollow Ring As Online Gambling Faces Extinction

(PRWEB) July 9, 2006 -- If you're a sports bettor, all the hyperbolized rhetoric that accompanied the recent red, white and blue celebrations should have a hollow ring, as our so-called lawmakers are working like little Iranian mullahs to smother the existence of Internet gambling.
Jubilation over our much exulted but actually quite fragile freedom pales when we examine what a couple of presumptuous, egocentric, narrow-minded politicos are in the process of putting over on the rest of us. But the fault lies not with the demagogues, whose Big-Brother-like activities are done blatantly in plain view of a somnambulant public. It is the nationwide fraternity of punters who don't realize that freedom is not a gimme that comes as a birthright, but a privilege that must be protected.
So while most of us indulged in barbecues, ball games and brewskis, Representatives Jim Leach, R-Iowa, and Bob Goodlatte, R-Virginia, spent the Independence Day break putting their pointy little heads together and formulating a joint plan that would kill our ability to bet online. If they succeed, it will turn back the clock to an era that saw bettors get the worst of it by being limited to taking their action to local bookmakers.
In the senate, blue-nose politicos are plotting to advance their version of an Internet betting ban that could gain approval without a committee hearing. When the house and senate are in agreement, the legislation will become a fait accompli.
Some fatuous people of faith, insulated by their religious zealotry, might scoff at the loss of this recreational outlet and see it simply as good trumping evil. But bettors realize how they will be compromised. They know what it means to bet into lines that force players to pay a premium to back local teams, or which gives them no alternative to usurious vig -- to mention just a few of the disadvantages that are alleviated by the offshore industry.
Meanwhile, the anti-gambling congressmen are feverishly reconciling the differences between their individual proposals which would finally put in place the prohibitions that spell the end of online betting.
House Republicans have vowed that an Internet gambling ban will be a top-10 priority in their «American Values Agenda.» The good folk of the GOP do not see any irony or contradiction in the name of their program.
The mind-numbing pablum that comes out of the mouths of these politicos is nauseating. But they live in their fantasy world because they get very little feedback that upbraids them for being so insular and out of touch with the rest of our nation's citizenry.
It falls upon the rest of us who enjoy the freedom to wager online, and do not wish to return to the dark ages in which illicit gambling was the only alternative to abstinence, to turn the tide. While Republicans are big fans of the simplistic credo, «Just Say No,» the rest of us have better sense.
Whether by email, snail mail, phone call, button-holing a politician in person, or any other mode of communication, we need to let our representatives know that we do not support legislation that dictates the demise of our lifestyle choice, online gambling.
